Why professional memberships for moving companies matter for the customer
Professional organizations have professional associations, and, guess what, moving companies are no different. Sadly, it’s true that some Washington moving companies don’t bother to be a part of these consumer protection oriented organizations.
We specialize in Seattle, Bellevue, and the Eastside, and Tacoma, and we’re a member of the statewide Washington Movers Conference (WMC). We’re also a member of the American Moving and Storage Association (AMSA). At Friends and Family Moving & Storage, we’re proud of our membership in these organizations and strongly believe in what they stand for.
We’re also subject to the rules, regulations, and protections of the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC). All of these organizations help you the consumer understand exactly what you’re paying for with professional moving services, as well as provide information on your legal rights and other options.
Anyone providing local or intrastate moving services in Washington must hold a permit with the Washington Utilities and Transportation Commission (WUTC). For one, this helps ensure we maintain adequate levels of liability insurance. If an illegal mover does your moving, you open yourself up to risk and may find your recourse severely limited if something goes wrong. You can count on the WUTC to provide you with consumer information aimed at smart decision-making when you’re getting ready for a residential or commercial move. The WUTC also functions as a liaison between its members, consumers, regulatory agencies, and the media.
The Washington Movers Conference (WMC) helps consumers determine whether a Washington-based mover is legally permitted. The WMC further states: “As a condition of WMC membership, each mover member agrees to abide by a code of conduct promising to provide Washington moving consumers with honest, legal, and efficient service. Trained personnel, operating clean and safe equipment, are standard WMC member service characteristics.” You can see why Friends and Family Moving & Storage is proud to be a WMC member.
Then there is the Washington D.C.-based American Moving and Storage Association, the national trade association for the professional moving industry. This 3,200-member organization that we belong to states as one of its main goals: “to include strong support for effective government regulations and policies that protect consumers while allowing members to provide quality service at compensatory prices, and ensuring that consumers understand the value of professional moving and storage services.”
We take pride in being subject to AMSA’s code of ethics, which includes that we abide by always offering and providing “the most efficient and reliable moving and storage services available, while adhering strictly to a policy of truth, honesty, integrity and fairness in all business transactions.” AMSA also “promotes the elimination of fraud, deceit, misrepresentation and unethical practices within the industry and to engage in formal disciplinary review of any and all members involved in such practices.”
So, rest assured that with Friends and Family Moving & Storage, you’re dealing with a regulated, ethical, professional Washington moving company that takes the time to keep up with industry standards, practices, and the promotion of consumer advocacy in the moving and storage field.
