John’s 7 don’t-move-without-’em moving tips

  1. Get rid of it-you can save money to boot!
  2. Moving stuff you don’t want or need costs you money. Moving is regulated and because in-state moves of 55 miles away or more are priced by weight, be sure to ask yourself, Do I really need these items? Have I used this in the last year? If the answer is no, consider donating those items to a charity or organization that can give them to a family in need.

When moving locally or around the state, moves are charged either by the hour or by the weight of the shipment, so adding numerous items you may not use will only cost you more money one way or another. So, maybe it’s time to just get rid of it! This will save you money in the long run and free up some extra space if you’re downsizing. Moving into clean, debris-free areas is so much more appealing than a cluttered room full of stuff, isn’t it?

  3. Give solid advance notice for switching your cable and phone
  4. Well in advance of your move, call the cable and phone companies and let them know you plan on moving. These companies have only a small window of time to switch your service, taking sometimes days or weeks to schedule.

  5. Transitioning pets
  6. Pets almost never enjoy the change and chaos of the moving process. Dogs and cats know when things aren’t quite right and sometimes run away or go into a sort of kitty or doggie depression.

Make sure they have a place they can be during your move. Never just think you can just stick them in an empty bathroom or leave them in a car. Make plans for them as well… Your pets will love you for it!

  7. Credit cards and your new address
  8. It’s too darn easy sometimes to procrastinate submitting your change of address. But a key reason to do it right away is to make sure you stay current on your credit card bill. Don’t let your credit rating suffer because you missed a payment!

  9. Moving in or out of a high-rise apartment
  10. When moving in or out of a high-rise building, be sure to find out if your mover has the required insurance certificates to be able to do moving at that kind of property.

A solid, knowledgeable moving company like Friends and Family Moving & Storage won’t have any problem obtaining the right insurance certificates, but they will need to be in place before the move begins. It’s important that we set it up in advance because most insurance companies will not be open on holidays and or weekends.

And then there’s the elevator-be sure to reserve it well in advance and let your moving company know the specific time frame you’ve got it reserved for. Be sure to let your mover know of any other details associated with these unique buildings so that the move can be as seamless as possible.

  11. Office moving-just say no to extra stress and lost productivity
  12. Office relocations can be much less stressful when you’ve chosen the right moving company. Our team of professionals has the knowledge and equipment to move your business with ease so you can be back to work in your new location. We know absolutely that “time is money”!

Our goal is to move your office equipment and furniture quickly and efficiently so you retain your normal productive business routine. We even have technical support if you need your computers set back up and networked.

  13. When parking areas near the building are limited…
  14. Moving out of an apartment or an office building that has limited parking? When you try to reserve a spot as close to the building as possible for the movers, hold the space with your own vehicle or use cones. If your building manager doesn’t have cones, you can buy bright, heavy-duty cones at places like Home Depot or Lowe’s. (And perhaps sell them to the landlord when you’re done!) Save time by having the space completely ready to go when your movers arrive so they can park near where they will be loading the truck, POD, or trailer.

So there you have them: a “lucky seven” assortment of key tips to help your move go more smoothly. It’s really the little things that do the trick!

Be vigil, prepare as much as you can ahead of time, and definitely choose a licensed mover. So what are you waiting for-call on Friends and Family Moving & Storage for all of your moving and storage needs! God bless, and happy moving from “Your Friends in Moving.”
